Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.
RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."
Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. estimates IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
