Daughter of Former South African Leader Zuma Refutes Terror-Related Accusations as Legal Proceedings Begins

The child of previous South African Head of State Jacob Zuma has denied all charges to terror-linked charges at the beginning of her trial in the harbor city of Durban city.

Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being prosecuted over statements she made on social media four years ago during deadly demonstrations in South Africa that came after the arrest of her father.

A week of anarchy in several parts of the country in mid-2021, including looting and intentional burning, resulted in at least three hundred dead and caused damage worth an approximate $2.8bn (£2.2bn).

She has been alleged of encouraging this turmoil and faces allegations of incitement to commit terror-related activities and public disorder.

Background of the Proceedings

The demonstrations were centered in the regions of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal province and came after the former president's apprehension for disobeying a judicial ruling to give evidence at an probe into claims of corruption while he was serving as president.

Ms Zuma-Sambudla has consistently denied the allegations against her, with her lawyer in the past labelling the state's legal argument as weak.

She has also repeatedly stated the allegations against her were an attempt to address political grievances with her dad after he established his own political party and ran against the African National Congress.

Endorsement and Court Representation

This was echoed by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which claimed the case was an "power abuse" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and familial targeting" against the previous head of state and his family.

A small number of backers from her party, uMkhonto weSizwe, turned up outside the judicial building, while her parent and other party leaders attended the hearings inside.

The defendant's representatives has maintained that the evidence presented by the state is unconvincing and fails to provide concrete grounds for a criminal finding.
