Israel Approves Nineteen Fresh Communities in Occupied West Bank

The nation's top security body has given its endorsement to the formalization of 19 additional communities in the disputed West Bank, representing a ongoing push for community development.

Hardline Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who lives in a settlement and proposed the step in concert with Defense Chief Israel Katz, stated that the approval was intended for thwarting the creation of a Palestinian state.

It is important to note that Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are considered illegal.

The announcement has drawn censure from Saudi Arabia. The United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has said that Israel's "persistent" growth of communities fuels tensions, curtails Palestinian access to territory, and threatens the prospects of a sovereign Palestinian state.

Rising Tensions and Political Repercussions

Clashes in the region has increased sharply since the hostilities in Gaza started in October 2023, intensifying fears that the growth of communities could solidify Israel's occupation and undermine the chance for a two-state solution.

The concept of two states refers to the creation of a State of Palestine in the Palestinian territories, with Jerusalem's eastern sector as its capital, roughly along the boundaries that were in place prior to the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

Since taking office in 2022, the current government in Jerusalem has ramped up the approval of new settlements and begun the formal recognition for previously illegal settler outposts, recognising them as "neighbourhoods" of established settlements.

A Pattern of Growth

The latest approval brings the overall count of communities recognized over the last three years to sixty-nine, according to the Finance Minister.

These authorizations are announced just days after the UN reported that settlement expansion had hit its highest level since 2017.

The latest batch of authorizations features the rebuilding of two communities — Ganim and Kadim — which were dismantled nearly two decades ago.

In a previous move, Israel gave the nod to 22 additional settlements in the occupied West Bank - what was the most significant expansion in many years.

In a related development, the Israeli government also approved blueprints in August to build over three thousand homes in the so-called E1 project between the capital and the Maale Adumim community, a plan that had been stalled for decades amid strong international condemnation.

On that occasion, the Finance Minister stated it would "put to rest the notion of a Palestinian state."

Demographic Facts and Global Reactions

An estimated seven hundred thousand settlers reside in approximately one hundred and sixty communities in the occupied territories, according to the Israeli anti-settlement group Peace Now. This is land that Palestinians aspire to have for a prospective independent state.

This ongoing construction has drawn ire from neighboring countries who have repeatedly said it erodes hopes for a peaceful two-state outcome.

It has also sparked concerns about the eventual formal annexation of the occupied West Bank.

Former American President Donald Trump had previously warned Israel about this step, stating to a publication that Israel would forfeit all its support from the United States if it proceeded.

In a policy change, the United Kingdom - together with other nations including Australia and Canada - formally recognized a State of Palestine, a significant although largely symbolic change in government policy.

Israel was against this recognition, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying that a sovereign Palestine "is off the table."
