A racing wheel detaches from the McLaren of Norris after he made contact with fellow driver Oscar Piastri at the opening of the United States Grand Prix short race.
McLaren Formula 1 executives Zak Brown and Stella blamed opposing racers for the crash between Piastri and Lando Norris at the start of the United States Grand Prix sprint event.
The Australian driver, ahead of his teammate in the standings by 22 points, crashed into his team-mate after making contact with the Nico Hulkenberg.
The collision eliminated both team drivers from the race, along with the Fernando Alonso, who was on the inner side of the Sauber driver.
Brown, McLaren Racing's chief executive officer, stated to broadcasters that some of the racing at the front was "unprofessional", remarking: "Clearly Hulkenberg hit Piastri and he had no reason being where he was."
McLaren F1 boss Andrea Stella stated: "Our feeling is that we are disappointed that we didn't have the chance to compete."
"It's surprising that some racers with a lot of expertise don't act with necessary care. Enter the initial turn, ensure you don't damage other drivers and continue."
The team indicated that the team principal was mentioning both Hulkenberg and the Aston Martin driver.
However, 1996 world champion Damon Hill, commentating for a sports broadcast, said he thought the Australian had not demonstrated enough understanding of the dangers of the opening turn of an Formula 1 event when he decided to move inside to try to pass Norris.
Piastri had a stronger launch than Norris and initially challenged on the outside on the ascending approach to the corner.
However he then moved inside in an effort to get a advantage on Norris on the exit, only to collide with Hulkenberg.
Piastri said: "Less than perfect but I haven't seen what occurred, I tried to cut back on Lando and we were both very far from the apex and then got a hit and it propelled me into Lando. Unfortunate."
Norris said: "I just was struck, right? I did nothing wrong. Behind us events unfolded and I just got unlucky and was struck because of it. I don't know. I need to review a bit more thoroughly. It's more people further back just being a bit reckless and we are the consequence of that."
Alonso said: "At one point I thought I was in the right place on the inside, but some vehicles came very quickly from the outer side changing direction and then I was there in the center."
Hulkenberg, who had earned a season-best fourth place, said: "Big frustrations. All the strong performance from yesterday in the bin. Just chaotic."
"Oscar steered inward pretty forcefully trying to get the inside line and exit of the first corner but I can't just disappear."
"I had Fernando challenge on the inside and I couldn't see him any more. I aimed to provide room for him and then Oscar steered inward and the contact was unavoidable."
McLaren will analyze the incident with their drivers but not until the event weekend. Both vehicles needed extensive work before grand prix qualifying at 22:00 BST on the weekend.
The team principal said: "In general disappointed but we accept it, we are now focusing on fixing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the event from there."
"We are in a strong position from our competitiveness point of view so I hope we have the possibility to compete, race normally and utilize our capabilities."
"Championship points are the key thing, I prefer not to talk about bad intentions, just prudence. A little more prudence would be good for everyone."
The race was taken by the Verstappen, who closed in on both McLaren drivers in the championship - he is now fifty-five points behind Piastri and thirty-three adrift of Norris.
Stella said: "The consequence is what the maths show - we missed out on eight points with both drivers, but we concentrate on ourselves. We have a highly capable vehicle and two strong racers. We anticipate just some normal racing."
Verstappen said he was taking the title race race by race.
