This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a deep examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot begins when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that arise in any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.
