Time is optimal to alter Manchester United's system - Amorim declares.

Head coach Ruben Amorim argues that switching Man Utd's tactical system due to media scrutiny would have meant "his demise" for him.

In a first against Newcastle, Amorim moved away from his customary three-at-the-back setup with wing-backs and instead use an standard back four with two central midfielders.

He himself conceded this ultimately transformed into a six-man defensive block in the latter minutes as his squad clung on for a win - securing only their second shutout of the campaign.

Despite he once notably stated that even the highest authority could compel him to tweak his system, Amorim maintains the capacity to play with varied formations has always been part of his long-term vision.

Yet, he emphasizes he could solely alter the tactics when his team were performing at an acceptable level - or else it would seem as if he was succumbing to outside criticism.

"At the time I arrived here the previous campaign, I understood perhaps I don't have the personnel to excel in that system, but it was the commencement of a project," he commented.

"We were trying to forge an style. Today is a distinct juncture. We lack a full complement of personnel, and we must adjust, so they see the reason we are making changes.

"It is not because of the influence of journalists, or the fans.

"Whenever the press discuss altering the system repeatedly, I cannot make a change because the players will believe I'm altering things because of external voices and I believe that is a disaster for the manager.

"Once we are getting results in our preferred setup, that becomes the opportunity to adapt.

"We will develop into a better side because when our full complement of personnel are available, we are not going to employ a back three exclusively."

Availability Crisis Loom Large

With only two wins in eight games prior to beating Newcastle, it is questionable whether Amorim is right to say his team have been playing well.

He is, nonetheless, managing with a severely stretched squad, with seven senior stars already unavailable for the forthcoming fixture against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That number will increase if playmaker Mason Mount fails to recover the injury that led to his exit from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is among those who will miss the Wolves match, even though he is reportedly urging his boss to let him to return after his muscle injury.

"Fernandes is already insisting he needs to train," said Amorim. "However there is no chance he is going to feature against Wolves. Definitely not. That's definitive."

The Captain's Influence Is Unwavering

However, the 31-year-old will almost certainly still be a prominent presence, as while most unavailable stars view matches from a private box, Fernandes was spotted keeping a close eye on the warm-ups from the mouth of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim expects his captain to carry on providing input.

"The guy is a natural leader," he affirmed. "He cannot be the type of player that when he is absent, he's silent and speaking. He's constantly communicating. That is the reason he's the captain.

"There are negative aspects sometimes - his mannerisms he gesticulates - but he has a lot of positive qualities. Even after he recovers, he heads to observe the other guys training. There are a lot of things that go unnoticed.

"I don't know if he wants my position or not, but he's a born leader. He is a leader."

Recovery Schedule for Key Personnel

Although the exact date for Fernandes' return - and that of other injured players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains uncertain, by the end of January, the club will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international duty.
