The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that became a focal point throughout his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors from the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key issue, was not quick to announce his residency plans right away after his triumph in November.

"My choice came down to the security of my family and the importance of directing my complete efforts on enacting the affordability agenda voters voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community famous for its diverse immigrant communities and culinary diversity.

"To Astoria: thank you for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will continue to reside inside me and the work I do," he said.

Political Debate

During his election campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.

However his critics, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing despite the fact that he hails from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a place for official events, and pushed for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment a stark contrast to his modest Astoria apartment.

With its pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Within, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's historical period.

The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the cost of housing rises faster than the average income.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
